The 2004 BMW M3 Coupe sold for $55,000, which is strong money for a high-mileage E46, especially given the market context.

This M3 is a standout in the E46 lineup, known for its blend of performance and classic styling. The Laguna Seca Blue paint is a favorite among die-hard BMW fans. Under the hood, it packs the 3.2-liter S54 inline-six, paired with a six-speed manual that amplifies the driving experience. With 96,000 miles, this car sits at an interesting crossroads between being a collectible and a driver. It's also been well-maintained, with significant service work including the crucial rod bearings done and a full Beisan Systems S54 VANOS rebuild. These factors give peace of mind to potential buyers who want a reliable performance car.

However, the sale price of $55,000 is 38% above the fair value estimate of $39,900. Given the mileage and the fact that it's not a low-mileage garage queen, this price feels like a stretch. The bidding was lively, with 52 bids, which indicates a strong interest, but that enthusiasm may have pushed the price beyond what most would consider reasonable for a car with this mileage.

Community reactions were mostly in favor of the sale price, with comments highlighting the allure of the Laguna Seca color and the desirability of this particular spec. One commenter noted, "It's not just about LSB, it's the value of that ideal spec. The magic of something special!" This captures the essence of why buyers are drawn to certain configurations of the E46 M3, but it also suggests a certain premium that collectors are willing to pay.

For buyers looking for a similar car, keep an eye on service history. The E46 M3 is notorious for certain maintenance issues, so ensure that critical components like the rod bearings and VANOS system have been addressed. A well-documented service history can make or break a potential deal, especially as prices continue to fluctuate in this segment.
