A 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC just sold for $38,000, which is strong money for a car that’s 239% above its fair value estimate of $11,200.

This specific 450SLC checks all the right boxes: a 4.5-liter M117 V8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, and just 65,000 miles on the odometer. It’s got a striking Silver Green Metallic exterior and a classy Pine Green leather interior. The car also features 14-inch Bundt alloy wheels, air conditioning, and a Becker Grand Prix radio, making it a well-rounded package for a collector or someone who appreciates vintage German engineering. The combination of low mileage and desirable options adds considerable appeal.

Now, let’s talk numbers. The auction saw an impressive 29 bids, indicating strong interest in this model. However, when you look at that sale price compared to the fair value estimate, it’s clear this buyer paid a premium. The $38,000 price tag is a steep jump from the $11,200 fair value, suggesting that buyers in the current market are willing to pay top dollar for low-mileage, classic luxury cars. While the bidding was competitive, the final price leans heavily into “strong money” territory, especially given the 239% markup over fair value.

Community sentiment was positive, with comments reflecting appreciation for the car’s color combination and overall design. One user, @stigpan, noted that the SLC is “the most underrated sport car” and praised its timeless design. It’s clear this model has a following, and the unique color combo likely contributed to the bidding frenzy.

For buyers on the hunt for a similar car, keep an eye on the mileage and the condition of the interior and exterior. Low mileage like this 450SLC can drive prices up significantly, but also make sure to check for service history and any necessary maintenance. A well-documented history can make a world of difference in resale and overall enjoyment.
