The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Project fetched a solid $41,000 at auction, and that price is strong money for a project car like this.

This specific model is significant for a few reasons. The 280SL is part of the W113 series, known for its clean lines and classic convertible design. Under the hood, this beauty boasts a 2.8-liter inline-six engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. With 97,000 miles on the clock, it’s clear this car has seen some road, but it’s still running and driving, which is a major plus for potential buyers. The recent refinishing in silver with blue MB-Tex upholstery gives it a fresh look, while the inclusion of both a convertible top and a hardtop adds versatility to the package.

When we look at the bidding dynamics, it’s hard to ignore the 28 bids placed during the auction. That kind of activity shows there was real interest in this project, driving the price up. Given its mileage and condition, $41,000 is a fair price in today’s market for a 280SL that’s ready for restoration. The combination of a running car with some recent maintenance work sets it apart from other projects that may require more immediate investment.

The community was enthusiastic about this sale. One user, @Nycredgroup, chimed in with a “Congrats!” right after the sale, reflecting the excitement around the final bid. The high level of engagement in the comments suggests that many viewers were keenly interested in this model, validating the price achieved.

For buyers on the hunt for a similar classic, keep a close eye on the restoration history. Understanding what work has been done and what still needs attention can make or break the project in terms of investment and enjoyment. Always ask for detailed service records and inspect the condition of the mechanical components, as these can significantly influence the total cost of ownership.
