The 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Convertible sold for $200,000, and that’s strong money for this particular piece of automotive history.

This GT500KR is a collector's dream, with only 518 units made in this convertible configuration. The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 under the hood is legendary, offering a thrilling driving experience. This model's combination of rarity and performance makes it a hot commodity. Finished in Candyapple Red, this Mustang isn't just about power; it's got the looks to match. The three-speed automatic transmission offers a more relaxed driving experience than the manual option, which can appeal to a broader audience.

When we look at the price, it’s essential to consider the car's mileage of 62,000 shown, which is relatively low, but keep in mind it’s also "TMU" (True Mileage Unknown). The extensive documentation, including service history and a Deluxe Marti Report, adds value but didn't quite justify the $200,000 sale price, especially given the fair value estimate of $171,100. This sale concluded 17% above fair value based on similar models, indicating that the market was willing to stretch for this one, but perhaps not as much as this final bid reflects. With 14 bids, there was certainly interest, but it seems many felt it should have sold for a bit less.

Community reaction was mixed. One comment stood out: "Thought this one deserved to do a bit more but it's off to a new home." This suggests that while some felt the car could have fetched an even higher price, there was also a recognition of its desirability.

For buyers hunting for a similar Shelby, check the authenticity of the paperwork. The Deluxe Marti Report can be a game-changer in validating a car's provenance. Look for original components and service history to ensure you're not just buying a pretty shell but a piece of history with a story worth telling.
